Some people love arugula tossed into a mixed salad and some people don’t.  I am becoming more fond of it with a mixed “greens” salad I guess…as my palette matures.  The first packet of seed I bought was a 10 cent packet from the Hart Seed Company.  This was in the 1950’s and it was a packet of arugula.  It quickly grew into a wild patch of leafy plants and at that time it smelled so much like skunk that I couldn’t bring myself to eat it. I am somewhat relieved to hear that Julia Child thought the same.  That’s all I have to say.

Arugula

A packet sows a 10 ft row (500 seeds)

Plant seed directly in the garden a few seeds per inch in a furrow.  Cover with 1/4 inch of soil.  Like early radishes this is a fast growing crop that needs fertile ground and well-drained soil.  Water when the soil is dry.  Ready to harvest in a month.  Summer heat will cause the plant to bolt and you can collect the seed.
