Native to Southeast Asia, Tulsi or Holy Basil is traditionally grown in pots to be used medicinally throughout the year. Leaves are used to make a refreshing tea. They can also be added to fruits and salads to add a delicate anise flavor.

Basil

A packet sows a 10 ft row (100 seeds)

Start the seeds indoors a month before the last frost.  The seed needs warmth and sun.  The seedlings can be transplanted into the garden when the ground is warm (mid May).  Basil is very frost sensitive and likes warmth.  Soil should be fertile and moist to grow the best plants.  Generally, pinching the forming flower spikes out so that it branches will produce more leafy shoots.  For seed saving, simply let the flowers bloom and dry with the mature seeds.
